Next time you head to the market with your kids, maybe you can organize a family taste test? You can do this with any kind of fruit or vegetable that comes in a lot of different varieties; think apples, cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes and melons. Our family tried this recently with melons. I regularly buy honeydew, watermelon and cantaloupe, so they chose 3 melons that we have never had before: 1) Canary; 2) Hami; 3) Orange Delicious.
Here are the details:
Canary Melon – This melon is Oblong/Oval shaped and was the biggest melon of the threesome. They are firm and have a sweet fragrance to them. To choose a good melon, look for one that is heavy but yields to slight pressure. The skin on a canary melon is bright yellow and the flesh is greenish/white, kind of like honeydew. The taste is a little tangier than honeydew though.
Hami Melon – These melons originated in China. They are oblong and their skin is yellow with green streaks. To pick a good one, again, look for a heavy melon that yields to pressure. This melon tasted sweet like a cantaloupe but with a firmer texture.
Orange Delicious – This hybrid melon is really a cross between honeydew and a cantaloupe. The exterior of the melon looks like a honeydew, while the interior looks like a cantaloupe. It tastes like really sweet honeydew. Look for the melon to yield to pressure to find a good one.
And the winner is … ORANGE DELICIOUS. HAVE FUN!!
